Gulangyu |
 |
Covering an area of almost 1.8 square
kilometers, Gulangyu Island is situated
in the southwest of Xianmen proper. The
blooming flowers, flourishing trees and
beautiful scenery win her a name of
¡°Garden on the Sea¡±. The Sunlight Rock,
the highest point on the island, offers
tourists a panoramic view of the sea and
the city. Shuzhuang Garden is
elaborately |
|
designed with artificial rocks,
zigzagging bridges, beautiful pavilions
and ancient caves. The islanders are
music lovers and for this the island has
earned the nickname ¡°Island of Music¡±.
Standing in front of Zheng Chenggong
Memorial Hall, a giant statue of the
patriotic general, Zhenchenggong is
gazing fondly at the sea. |

Located in the north of Fujian
Provine, Wuyi Mountain is a
picturesque and fascinating
scenic attraction. Taking an
area of 60 square kilometers,
the scenic area includes one
stream, seven shoals, nine
ponds, eleven ravines, thirteen
springs, thirty-six peaks,
sixty-one rocks, seventy-two
caves, ninety-nine cliffs and
one hundred and eight scenic
spots. Among them the Nine-Bend
Stream is the most famous.
Meandering around numerous queer
peaks, the Nine-Bend Stream
winding |
|
nine kilometers with
crystal-clear water, which
sometimes runsswiftly and
sometimes remains quiet. It is
an exciting experience for
tourists to cruise on a bamboo
raft on the Nine-Bend Stream
with 9 kilometers in a distance
to enjoy the enchanting sight of
exotic peaks and historical
sites and relics along the bank
while listening to the rafters
for his beautiful legends and
songs. |
Wuyi Mountain is also famous for its
cultural relic and historical sites.
Over 30 boat-coffins belonging to the
ancient Yue people more than 3,000 years
ago are still perched in cliff caves up
on the cliff side of the steam. In
addition, there are over 400 historical
sits including palaces, Taoist temples,
monasteries and cliff carvings as well
as the site of ancient kilns of the Song
Dynasty and the imperial tea garden.
Apart from all these, Muyi Mountain has been
called the home of animal species (home
to over 400 animal species), the
paradise of birds (home to 300bird
species), the world of insects (home to
over 5,000 insect species), the kingdom
of snakes (home to 64 kinds of snakes).
For these reason, Wuyi Mountain is the
treasure of living things and the key to
the research on the origin of living
things in Southeast Asia. In 1970 the
State Council approved the establishment
of the Wuyi Mountain Nature Reserve. In
1987 the reserve was nominated a
biosphere reserve under the UNESCO Man
and Biosphere Program. In 1999, UNESCO
had it registered on the List of the
World Cultural and Natural Heritage. |
