4Hubei

     Hubei, a province in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and to north of Dongting Lake, is abbreviated as ^Er ̄. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, it was the territory of the State Chu. Under the jurisdiction of Jingzhou Prefecture in the Han Dynasty, it became a province during the Qing Dynasty. The 180,000-square-kilometer province is home to Hans, Tujias, Miaos, Huis, Dongs, Manchurians and other ethnic peoples, with a total population of 60 million. Wuhan is the capital city of the province.

     The province slopes from the west to the east. Shennongjia, eastern part of Daba Mountain, sits in the west of the province, and its highest peak is 3,105 meters above sea level. The Jianghan plain, in the southeast of Hubei, has so many lakes that gain it a nickname of ^Province of a Thousand Lakes ̄.
      Hubei, with s long history and developed culture, was one of birthplaces of Chinese Nation. People in primitive society lived there hundreds of thousand years ago, and advanced Chu Culture was also

 created here. During the Three Kingdoms Period, it became a major battlefield. Hubei is endowed with a list of tourist attractions, such as the East Lake, Yellow Crane Tower, Guiyuan Temple, Longzhong Relics, Wudang Mountains, Shennongjia, Xiling Gorge and Memorial Temple of Quyuan. In 1994, the UNESCO had the ancient compound on the Wudang Mountains and Ming Xianling Tomb listed as the world cultural heritage sites.
