Shaanxi Province is a landlocked province in the
middle reaches of the Yellow River, with the
abbreviation of Shaan or Qin. Covering an area
of more than 190.000 square kilometers, it has a
population of 36 million of Hans, Huis,
Manchurians, Mongolians and other ethnic
peoples. The capital of the province is XiˇŻan
City. |

As early as the Zhou Dynasty, it was
already called Shaanxi. It belonged to
the State of Qin in the Spring and
Autumn and Warring States periods,
Guannei and Shannan in the Tang Dynasty,
Shaanxi again in the Song Dynasty.
Shaanxi as a province was established in
the Yuan Dynasty. In Chinese history 13
dynasties had their capital cities in
the province, with a total of 73
emperors ruling from there. |
The venerated culture of Shaanxi plays
an important role in Chinese
civilization. The province is dotted
with more than 35,000 cultural relic
sites, including 60-odd
|
palaeoanthropologic
and Paleolithic and Neolithic sites,
4,300 ancient tombs, of which 72 are large scale tombs of
emperors, more than 1,200 temples and
monasteries, 557 grottoes, and 20,000 or
so other historical sites of stone
carvings ancient and modern buildings.
Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shihuang had
become a world heritage site. XiˇŻan,
Xianyang, YanˇŻan, Yulin, Hancheng, and
Hanzhong are national famous historical
and cultural cities. Main tourist spots
in Shaaxi are Lishan, Huashan, and
Tiantai Mountains, Big and Lesser
Wild-Goose Pagodas, Zhaoling and
Qianling tombs, Mausoleum of the Yellow
Emperor, Huaqing Palace and so on.

XiˇŻan, once called ChangˇŻan in ancient times, is
one of the 6 great ancient capitals in China.
Spanning a period of more than 1,000 years, it
served intermittently as the capitals of 13
dynasties, including Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, Tang
and other dynasties and a total of 73 emperors
had ruled China from there, for which it has
been entitled the ˇ°the emperorˇŻs City from the
Beginning of Time.ˇ±Early in the Han Dynasty,
XiˇŻan was already an |
important city for international
exchangebetween China and various countries, and
it was also the very starting point of the
well-known ˇ°Silk Roadˇ±. The long history has
left XiˇŻan a rich cultural legacy. It is famous
for her scenic spots, beautiful natural
environment and rich artistic treasures, and is
now one of the tourist attractions. The main
tourist attractions are mausoleum of Qinshihuang
and his mighty army of terracotta warriors and
horses, as well as Huaqing Hot Spring. The other
scenes and sights include Banpo Village Ruins,
Greater and Lesser Wild-Goose Pagodas, Bell
Tower and Drum Tower, City Wall, Xingjiao
Temple, Famen Temple, Shaanxi History Museum,
XiˇŻan Stele Forest, and Grand Mosque.
