Forbidden City£ºalso known as the Palace Museum£¬ it is the largest and best-preserved clusters of ancient wooden buildings in the world¡£ It was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties¡£The basic layout was originally built in 1406 £¨the forth year of Ming Emperor Yongle¡¯s reign£©. Covering an area of 72 hectares, it has 8,704 halls and rooms. The Palace Museum is divided into two parts: Outer Court and Inner Court. Main buildings of the Outer Court are the Hall of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Complete Harmony and Hall of Preserving Harmony. The Hall of Supreme Harmony, used for great ceremonial occasions, is the most splendid one, symbolizing the supreme authority of the feudal emperors. The Inner Court was where the emperor managed state affairs and also the place the empress and imperial concubines lived main constructions including the Palace of Heavenly purity, Hall of Union, Palace of Earthly Tranquility, as well as Six East Palaces and Six West Palaces. The state of art design and grand pattern has made it a rarity of exquisite eastern architecture in 1987; it was inscribed on the world Heritage List by the UNESCO.
Great Wall: Starting out in the east on the bank of Yalu River in Liaoning Province, the Great Wall stretches westwards for over 7,350 kilometers to Jiayu Pass in Gansu Province, so it is also called ¡°the Ten Thousand Li Wall¡±. It took more than two millennia for the Great Wall to be completed, beginning during the 7th century BC. Most parts of the wall were built on the ridges of mountains, looked imposing and magnificent. In 1987, it was inscribed on the World Heritage List by the UNESCO. The section of the Great Wall in Beijing area, lengthening 629 kilometers, is known as a rugged line of defense guarding the capital, as well as the most distinctive and best preserved. Of the wall, the sections of Badaling, Juyong Pass, Mutianyu, Simatai and Gubeikou are distinctively featured by grandness, steepness, beautifulness and oddness and acclaimed as the acme of perfection.
Summer Palace: Situated in western outskirts of Beijing, the Summer Palace is the typical classical garden in China and one of the most famous gardens in the world. It consists of the Longevity Hill and the Kuning Lake with a total area of 290 hectares, among which three fourths is covered by the lake. The whole garden is functionally divided into three sections, namely court reception area, residence area and sightseeing area. Combining the delicacy of private gardens in south China and the elegancy of imperial gardens, the Summer Palace has a significant place in the history of landscape gardening .the Summer Palace was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1998 by the UNESCO.
Temple of Heaven: Originally built in 1420 (the 18th year of Ming Emperor Yongle¡¯s reign), the Temple of Heaven is located in south Beijing covering an area of 273 hectares. It functioned as a vast stage for solemn rites performed by emperors of Ming and Qing dynasties to sacrifice to the Heaven and is the largest existing architectural complex used for worshipping the Heaven in the world. It was inscribed on World Heritage List in 1998 by the UNESCO. The compound is divided into the inner altar and outer alter. The main worshipping buildings are located inside the inner altar: the Circular Mound Altar and Imperial Vault of Heaven in south of the inner alter, while the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and Hall of Imperial Zenith in the north. A 360-meter-long Red Stairway Bridge links the two groups of architecture. Unique design and symbolic layout of the Temple of Heaven have embodied ancient Chinese thought of ¡°complete harmony of man and nature¡±. Not only is the Temple of Heaven a scare masterwork in the history of Chinese architecture, but also a precious heritage of world existing ancient architecture.
Ming Tombs: Sitting on the south slopes of Jundu Mountain in Changping District, Beijing, the Ming Tombs (also called Shisanling, literally, Thirteen Tombs) are mausoleums of the larges and having most emperors¡¯ and empresses¡¯ mausoleums cluster of imperial cemeteries in China, the Ming Tombs are located in a 40-square-kilometer-nearly basin, screened by mountains on three sides. Scattered in and around the basin, each tomb is against a hill. The whole tomb area shows a harmonious unity but distinguished by different characteristics. The UNESCO added the Ming Tombs on the List of World Heritage in 2003.
Hutongs Tour: Hutongs are back alleys where old traditions remain very much alive and kicking. There are about 4,550 of them in Beijing. Ubiquitous in these hutongs are quadrangle dwellings. Close by Prince Gong¡¯s Mansion there are some of Beijing¡¯s best-preserved hutongs. Touring these hutongs by the traditional pedicab is a travel program of Beijing.
Beijing Roast Duck: Beijing Roast Duckhas the reputation of being the most delicious food Beijing could offer. A Beijing duck dinner is usually a fixed item on any Beijing tour itinerary. The earliest Beijing Roast Duck restaurant was the Bianyifang, founded more than 400 hundred years ago, in the southern city of Beijing. Another restaurant, which offers Beijing Roast Duck, is Quanjude. Today the Quanjude has become a business group, has outlets in every district of Beijing. It is said that the first restaurant opened in 1864 near today¡¯s Tian¡¯an Men Square. At Quanjude, ducks are immersed in condiments unique to the restaurant and are roasted directly over flames stocked by fruit tree wood. The best roast duck is dated-red, shining with oil, but with a crisp skin and tender meat. A chef then cuts the meat into thin pieces, each having a piece of skin. The meat is served with very thin pancakes, Chinese onions and special sauce. The way to enjoy it is to put several pieces of meat, onions and a little sauce to together on the thin pan-cake and roll them up either with hand or chopsticks. The flavor is really delicious.
Acrobatic: the Chinese acrobatics has a long history and rich national flavor. It is one of the art forms most popular among the Chinese people. It has a distinct style evolving from everyday life and work. Despite the advent of dazzling film shows and song-and-dance performances, acrobatics now still shines as one of brightest stars in Chinese culture. With about 2,500 years of history, Chinese acrobatics has won the nation the title of ¡°Kingdom of Acrobatics,¡± and the Chinese acrobatic troupes have traveled to many countries and regions the world over and have amazed audiences everywhere.
Since 1949, the people¡¯s government has made great efforts to foster and develop national arts and acrobatics has gained a new life. All provinces, autonomous regions and provinces have set up their own acrobatic troupes. The acrobatic art of the new china has not only made great improvement in its contents and skill but also set up a designing and directing system, aiming at creating graceful stage images, of costumes, props and lighting so as to bring about a full-fledged stage art. The present Chinese acrobatics is full of optimism and well reflects the industry, resourcefulness, courage and dauntlessness of the Chinese people.
Peking Opera: Peking Opera has entertained audiences for more than 200 years with its elaborate costumes, ear-splitting arias, dazzling martial arts and musical dialogue. Most Peking Operas are unintelligible to the untrained viewer, but they are usually based on folk tales, famous novels and fairy tales, and are a pleasure to watch if you know the story. Characters are classified into three basic categories: the male roles, called ¡°sheng¡±, female roles or ¡°dan¡± and clown or ¡°chou¡±. The nature of each character is shown through the different colors of the facial makeup denotes authority.
In the early days of the 20th century, millions went to the opera house ¨Cmore like a teahouse or a variety theatre ¨C and largely through the acting genius of the late Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), Peking Opera even influenced Western artists such as Charles Spencer Chaplin (1889-1977) in England and playwright Bertold Brecht (1898-1956) in Germany. |
